Default OBD3.... the end of performance modification?

I have heard a lot of things in class today when we talked about the Chevy volt and the new cars that are coming out and the fact that they are probably going to OBD 3 in 2012. The things I have heard about what OBD 3 will be able to do is also very scary. Has anyone else heard anything, i figured id open this up to discussion before i threw my two cents out there.

Agreed, the stuff it can send out and receive is insane. Like if your o2 sensor goes out it can send a message to the state and they call you and tell you that you have 30 days to fix it. Thats completely insane to me. Recording all the information on how how you drive....

imo, this gets into invasion of privacy and nullifies the 5th amendment... but driving is a privilege, not a right. I won't be buying anything OBD3. I can see sales plummeting too. People don't want constant monitoring.

Exactly my thoughts, someone will make conversions for the cars to run OBD0/1/2.

Cant do that with emissions now. Itll be just like having a obd 2 car swapped with a obd1 engine. Wont pass. If you dont believe me DOHCcivic i think it is went through hell last year getting his inspected. This is all why my car will be keeping its SC plates. It really depends on how hardcore they go with all of this.

To me honestly it reminds me of the muscle car wars and then the invention of emissions and cats and all of that.

Is this already out? I can't seem to find any solid info online about it, just a bunch of threads in other car forums and conservative blogs freaking out about it. Some of the post/blogs date back to 1996, when obd2 came out.

From what i hear it will be standard in all 2012-2013 cars. You totally will buy something obd3 there will be some new Z car that makes the 350z and 370z look like a shit pile and youll probably want it. You cant say youll never buy a obd3 car because its likely to be what we will be looking at for the next 10-20 years. However i think owning a car with that kind of stuff on it will be more expensive when something goes wrong, and if they do what they did with the tesla if you void the warranty in any way they will have proof to deny your claim.

Everyday I find a new reason why I'm glad I'm a programmer. Have no fear, I'm not the only car guy who likes computers.

Just like OBDII got hacked, OBD3 will get the treatment as well. I can plug my computer into my car and make every thing say pass when it goes for inspection ( even if it doesn't exist on my car lol )

The same thing will happen with OBD3. If you can put data on it, it can be manipulated.

all these new electronics and retarded creature comforts just make for more issues.

I am all for plastic and aluminum body panels and frames (cheaper to repair) but they need to do away with the stupid electronics such as coffee alert and heated thumb holes on the steering wheel. its just asking for more shit to break which I guess is good for the dealers but bad for the consumers.
