    Default Miata power steering

I am thinking about buying an old miata as a project car. it's a 1994 and does not have power steering. Is this normal or is the power steering pump broken?

    thanks for the help.

94 R packages did not have P/S. Just look under the hood, if it has a p/s pump it will be the thing with a pully on the top of the drivers side of the motor.

more than just the r package came without power steering. Could be just a base model. R package is basically a base model with bilstein shocks, lip kit, lsd, and some other things i cant remember. 94 is the best year. 1.8, bigger brakes than earlier cars, usable oil pressure guage, better dash, still obdI, etc. If you are going to make it a project, then it doesnt matter toooo much what trim it is.

but you'll never miss the power steering...assuming that it didn't have it and its not broken (not that I would know about the broken part, I've just always heard its horrible)

mine doesn't have p/s and its soooooooo much easier to drive than my civic, also without p/s.

plus, you shouldn't pass on a miata...they are just awesome cars!

If you do get a true non-ps miata, I'd be willing to give you an entire power steering setup including the rack, pump, lines, steering column u-joint etc. in exchange for the non-power stuff. It would be everything that you need to convert a non-ps car to a ps car.

As stated above, several miata's came without power steering, just make sure that you actually have a manual rack in the car and not a power steering rack with the pump removed.

From the factory P/S was an option.

Actually a depowered power rack is preferred. It is a faster ratio than the manual rack without much, if any problems. Its what a lot of spec miata and track guys do. Most autocross guys don't/won't because it is not class legal. You have to actually swap racks.

A miata is stupid easy to get around with without power steering. The best way to depower is to just drop the rack, open it up, cut the seals and grease it. (Search Flyin Miata's website for a walktrhough) Or you can just loop the lines to keep fluid in the seals, its really not hard at all. I did the looped line method until I pull the motor so it will be easier to get to the rack.

It should also be mentioned that most 94s did come with the torsen LSD. For some reason mazda went crazy and wanted to give a lot of cars a LSD.
